‘Family’ Articles

Dating is not about dating each other anymore, it is about dating each other’s entire extended family.

Bitter melon season is over!

As jigg’s parents will inevitably become my future in-laws, I have been trying to earn brownie points with them.

During a dinner conversation that occurred during the second or third time I met jigg’s parents, I found an opportunity when his dad mentioned how many kids these days don’t appreciate bitter melon because their parents do not force them to eat. His proposed solution is simple: assimilation – if kids eat a little bit of it on a regular basis, they would slowly develop the acquired taste for it. jigg then added that it only took him a little bit over a year of constantly eating bitter melon to like it.

Based on the number of times (it’s a lot) that I have noticed bitter melon as the ingredient in jigg’s dad’s subsequent dinner entrees and how he fondly speaks of its deliciousness, I think I could assume that bitter melon is one of his favorite vegetables. I thought that it would surely be impressive if I could develop an acquired taste for it too!

So for the past several dinners, I have been eating bits of bitter melon each time. Personally, it is not something I would eat on my own free will. Bitterness is a taste that I associate anything that is gross with…like medicine and ear wax (yes, I have tasted that and it is bitter). To date, I still don’t like bitter melon.

When I asked jigg what he had for dinner last night and guessed whether it’s bitter melon, he laughed and told me that bitter melon season is over.  Me –> :)

Semper ubi sub ubi

Over the past six months, I have been leaving behind various pieces of clothing at jigg’s place (essential stuff like underwear and socks) so I don’t have to keep carrying luggage back and forth. jigg would then help me do laundry so I get fresh clean clothes to wear on my next visit.

Unfortunately he forgot to do laundry before my visit this weekend and I had no clean underwear. The fastest way would be to hand-wash a couple of pairs and hang them out to dry overnight so that I would have a fresh pair available the following morning.

jigg then placed my dirty underwear in a bucket in the bathroom to let them soak before washing (not that they were that dirty). When he went back an hour later, he realized that all my underwear were clean and hung out neatly to dry.  Apparently his mom hand-washed them for me! I was too embarrassed even to thank her because saying “Thanks for handwashing my dirty underwear” to your future mother-in-law is just weird.

Mom: Physiognomist, Fortune Teller, and Astrologist Extraordinaire

Prior to meeting jigg, my mother thought she could form a fairly accurate depiction of my boyfriend by just looking at his picture. Along with a few additional questions concerning his diet, hobbies, and astrology sign, Boston Mom was convinced she knew jigg better than me.

When I showed her jigg’s Facebook profile picture, she concluded he was quite handsome with a broad forehead, large eyes, nicely curved lips, strong jaw line, and good sized ears – all good qualities that positively told something about his temperament, wealth, generosity, etc.

She then asked if he eats vegetables. (Yes.) This is important because according to some “scientific” article, people who don’t eat vegetables have violent temper due a lack of some nutrient or other.

Her next set of questions concerned his interests and hobbies. When I began listing the various sports he plays, she became very alarmed with the fact that he boxes. Apparently boxers are violent people and warned me that I shouldn’t piss him off else he would knock me out one day.

Next she took our birthdays and zodiac signs into account and concluded jigg and I are a great match.

Not that I believed in any of this hocus pocus, but maybe there is hope in astrology after all.
